(via) The aurora borealis is amazing. I’ve seen it a bit in Alaska, but never to this extent. I wouldn’t mind visitting Iceland.

 RESTful Web Services

I’m typically not a huge fan of Java, but I’m also not a fan of much of the documentation that passes for “into to the meaning of REST” that exists online.

This is a super good article on web services, and if you’re a believer in building simple web services (which are stateless) this would be a great place to start, even if you don’t like Java.

 Is Arc'Teryx on SteepAndCheap? (Twitter)

I love Steep And Cheap, but a lot of the stuff they post isn’t interesting to me. I have a fondness for Arc’Teryx (mostly just the Made in Canada stuff) and am always curious to see when their products make it onto SteepAndCheap.

I created this Twitter account to basically notify the world whenever this happens. I used python-twitter and the entire script is 5 lines total (could’ve been 1, but, you know, Python and whitespace…).

Maybe this will help out some of you other gear whores/snobs out there. It certainly won’t help me at all, and will most likely end up coercing me into spending money on gear I don’t need!

Revanche Trailer (not safe for work!)

This is next on my list of Criterions to buy. Sadly it may be a while, all the titles that went out of print last week forced a few extra purchases lately.

 The Night I Met Einstein

A transcription from Reader’s Digest. I’ve always been fond of Einstein’s quirkiness and his subtle charisma, but I hadn’t read many anecdotal tales like this. I may have to go find an Einstein biography.

Born of Hope

An actress spent her life savings to make this prequel to Lord of the Rings. I just watched the first 5 or 10 minutes, and the production is actually very good.

Behind the Scenes with Fritz Lang

(via) This is a really cool look at all the drawings that went into Metropolis. I saw this at the Fox in Atlanta with a live organist many years ago, and it was pretty awesome. I’m psyched for the recently-found extra footage.

He always wore his influences on his sleeve. JP Donleavy, Faulkner, Mencken, Fitzgerald, Kerouac, Hemingway. He used and re-used the last line from A Farewell To Arms, over and over: “I walked back to the hotel in the rain.”

Legend has it that he retyped a Hemingway novel to understand how the writer got his effects.

welcome...

to periphery.org, a weblog that I maintain. Every time a lightbulb goes off in my head, I try to post the solution here. I also tend to post interesting quotes, links, etc.

I also post code here. I try to maintain it in a Git repo, and every time I check in something new I'll write an entry here with some explanation and examples.
